Rupert Smith and Niord |

| I am 64 and retired. I started sailing as a boy crewing for my Father and ever since I have sailed whenever the opportunity arose. Apart from sailing in the Channel I have sailed and cruised off the West Coast of Britain in the area from Cape Wrath to Anglesey and in the Baltic. I have cruised twice in the Aegean and once nearly 25 years ago in the Caribbean. Since the early 90’s I have frequently sailed single-handed, initially in a Tiki 26 and since 2003 in Niord, a Vancouver 28. I keep Niord on a mooring on the River Exe at Starcross. Last year in early June, as a test of myself and the boat, I sailed a variation of the course of the Fasnet Race from the Exe and back. This experience together with the rest gave me the confidence to put my name down for the Azores Challenge. |
